Product Reviews (For Affiliate Marketers)
Published: · Updated:
Forget Everything You Think You Know About Product Reviews.
Most affiliate marketers treat product reviews like cheap infomercials – all hype and no heart. They don’t understand the real currency online: trust.
If you want to build a sustainable, worthwhile affiliate business, it’s time for a different approach.
Principles Over Paychecks
- Trust is the long game. A quick commission isn’t worth damaging your reputation. People will spot a fake from a mile away.
- Be their trusted friend. Your job is to guide them through the noise, not add to it. Sometimes, that means recommending against a product (even if it means losing a sale).
- Actions speak louder. Put your money where your mouth is. If possible, buy the product. This shows you care enough to walk the walk.
Ditch the Cliches, Dig Deeper
- “Revolutionary” is meaningless. Don’t just echo the marketing hype. Get specific – why does this matter to your audience?
- Show your skepticism. Those over-the-top claims making you raise an eyebrow? Dig in! Share your thought process with your audience.
- Don’t be afraid of alternatives. This makes you an authority, not a salesperson. Compare a few competing products to show you know your stuff.
Focus on Their Problems
- People buy solutions, not features. What desperate problem does this product address for your audience? Lead with that pain point.
- Use their language. How do they talk about their struggle? Repeat those words and phrases to forge a connection.
- Show the before and after. Get visceral! Paint a picture of what it’s like to live with that problem, and how the product can genuinely change their life.
Pros AND Cons (Yes, Really)
- No product is perfect. A balanced review shows you’re honest, that you understand the product’s limitations, AND its strengths.
- “Dealbreakers” are your friend. Certain flaws might make it genuinely unsuitable for certain people. Be upfront about those (it saves headaches later).
- Context is everything. A tiny flaw for one user might be a major deal for another. Help explain who might be affected, and who won’t.
Personality Wins
- Write like you talk. Don’t fall into corporate-speak. Be yourself, be conversational.
- Don’t be afraid of being subjective. Did you have a great (or terrible) experience? Own your opinions, it’s what makes you relatable.
- Tell a story. Did this product solve a personal problem? Even if it was a small thing, those stories are powerful
Bonus: Think Like a Publisher
- Your in-depth review is your feature film. The backbone of your content.
- Social media posts are trailers. Snippets, juicy quotes, short demos…they all tease your main review.
- Create anticipation. Cross-promote your review – use different formats to reach people who learn in different ways.
The Bottom Line
Treat your audience how you’d want to be treated. Give value, build genuine relationships, and the success will come.
It might be slower, but it’s a thousand times more fulfilling than being just another sleazy affiliate.
Stay awesome,
Tim
